Millimeter and Submillimeter
Waveguide Transition Tapers

The PM3 may be used at any frequency above the WR10 band through the use of a simple waveguide taper from WR10 to the band of interest. The sensor is inherently a very wideband and responds well to most waveguide modes so a low mode conversion taper is not needed. Linear tapers are easy to reproducibly fabricate, and their insertion loss is very predictable. Tapers are available to all waveguide bands through WR1.9 (400-600 GHz) with estimated calibration. Note that the loss of these tapers is small enough that any errors in the taper loss contribute a very small error in the measured power. At higher frequencies, single mode waveguide is generally not used, but if needed special tapers can be made. Most applications up through 2 THz use oversized waveguide or feed horns for coupling and special tapers can be made for these applications as well. In all cases it is possible to estimate the coupling loss with reasonable accuracy.
